Fully justifiably, a lot has been said and written about the beauty of our land and our natural resources in our villages.<\/p>\n

My village is Kormakitis and I will write about it, but for sure the same applies for the other beautiful villages of our community for their own people.<\/p>\n

Over the years, we many times heard comments such as \u201cKormakitis is a beautiful village, but its people are \u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n

Nothing could be more untrue than the second part of this sentence!<\/p>\n

Here is where a wise Cypriot saying fits well \u201c \u039f \u03ac\u03b4\u03c1\u03c9\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2 \u03b5\u03bd \u03bf \u03c4\u03cc\u03c0\u03bf\u03c2\u201c !
\nIn a quick translation \u201c Man makes the place\u201d.<\/p>\n

Kormakitis is beautiful BECAUSE of its people!<\/p>\n

For centuries the people of Kormakitis, isolated and neglected, worked extremely hard to buy the land from non-village businessmen who were the previous land owners, to make the land fertile, to fill it with beautiful and productive carob and olive trees, to make \u201c\u03b4\u03ae\u03bc\u03bc\u03b1\u03c4\u03b1\u201d (tying together a plot of land to protect it from water flows and from erosion) and \u201c\u03b4\u03cc\u03bc\u03b5\u03c2\u201d (protective barriers made of stones collected by hand one by one and placed at the borders of plots of land) , to dig wells and make \u201c\u03c0\u03b5\u03c4\u03c1\u03b1\u03cd\u03bb\u03b1\u03ba\u03b1\u201d ( a channel to let the water flow from one place to another for irrigation, built with stone and mortar) and \u201c\u03b4\u03bf\u03be\u03b1\u03bc\u03ad\u03bd\u03b5\u03c2\u201d (water deposits), and literally to toil every inch of the land and make it fertile.<\/p>\n

They worked hard and honestly for centuries to own the land and to make it beautiful and fertile as it is today.<\/p>\n

They lived close to this land, and were buried in it. They became one with the land of Kormakitis.<\/p>\n

Our land is our little very own \u2018motherland\u2019, our paradise on earth. It gave birth to us and it fed us.
\nIt is now in danger. We are in danger of losing it after many centuries of being together.
\nWe have a huge duty to continue the struggle to keep our land, to love it, to care for it, and to make sure that we pass it to our descendants, just like our ancestors passed it to us.<\/p>\n
